HILLVIEW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Welcome Back as we begin the 2011/2012 School Year!
Hillview’s seventh annual Narnia Night was a huge success for fifth graders and their parents. After students entered through the wardrobe, Hillview’s Media Specialist Mrs. Munro read the beginning of Prince Caspian by C.S. Lewis and then students participated in a variety of activity stations. Students made shields and crowns, had a story-themed tea with Mr. Beaver, created stone statues of Aslan and had fun using the student response clickers during the “White Witch’s Trivia Challenge”. It was certainly an evening to remember! Finally, congratulations to all of the fifth graders who helped to decorate a tree for the Storybook Forest Display at the Morris Museum. Their Narnia-themed tree was on display at the museum during the month of December with other book-themed trees from other area schools.
On Friday, January 6, 2012 Hillview School had its annual Faculty vs. 5th Grade Students Volleyball game. It was an amazing game. Teachers won the first round with the help of Mr. Belardo, our trusted professional volleyball player. 5th Grade students from Mrs. Martinez’s class won the second game. We had a great time!
Hillview’s Grade 3 did a wonderful performance in November. All the songs contained the theme of good character. The titles involved words such as citizenship, good manners, and responsibility. The program was coordinated and directed by Mr. Bill Vivino, music teacher at Hillview School. Mrs. Lohn and Ms. Handy created the backdrops and many parents assisted in helping with the backdrop as well. The students not only learned about harmony, lyrics, and voice skills, but also gained a valuable experience in learning all about good character.
Mr. Wispelway from the Pequannock Rotary Club presented third graders of Hillview School with brand new Webster’s Dictionaries. This has been a tradition at Hillview School and the students in Grade 3 look forward to the occasion. Mr. Wispelway spoke about the Rotary Club and how this organization is able to help children in need of assistance. This was an important connection to the community and to our school’s character traits. He also shared the value of the dictionary and some of the great things that they could find inside!

At Hillview, we learned that it is not that easy to take back disrespect. This was demonstated to us when one student tried to put toothpaste back into the tube after it was already squeezed out. But it just couldn't be done! We also made bumper stickers, read books, completed activities, and performed tasks illustrating the importance of respect.
A Year to Treasure at Hillview” is the theme for the 2011-2012 school year. At Hillview School, we will learn how we can treasure ourselves, our family, our friends, the earth, and our school. This theme provides a focus for our lessons and integrates our goal of good character. Hillview School has a wealth of wonderful students, teachers and parents that are ready to help us dig up a fantastic year!
