Family and Consumer Science
Mrs. Phyllis O’Neal
Overall, the goal of our Family & Consumer Sciences elective courses is through hands-on-learning, to help students acquire skills that foster an independent and healthy life style. In a cooperative learning environment, students practice life skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, decision making, and teamwork.
6th - Skills for Living
A cycle class that provides students with basic skills and abilities that will be useful in everyday life. Topics include nutrition, cooking techniques, kitchen safety, and clothing repair. In a lab setting, students work cooperatively to prepare simple, nutritious foods.
7th- Restaurant Design
A project-based restaurant design activity challenges teams of students to collaboratively create a unique restaurant. Students determine a theme, design a menu, develop and prepare a signature dish, and create a floor plan.
7th- Foods & Nutrition
Using a hands-on approach, students discover the relationship between food, nutrition, and a healthy body. Students plan and prepare nutritious snacks and meals. We also "cook up" science as we study topics such as fermentation and the role ingredients play in recipes.
8th - Kids Inc.
Using a hands-on approach, students discover what it takes to run a successful business. We explore the creative process and inventions. Students form companies and create and market a new snack product. We utilize technology to analyze trend data in order to design and market a new product. A highlight of our cycle is our Iron Chef competition where teams of students compete to create the most delicious recipes using a given set of ingredients.
8th - World Foods
Via the foods laboratory, students tour the world and learn about other countries. Students explore the many factors that impact the foods and customs of other countries. Students research another country in depth and prepare recipes from various countries. This study of culture and food is an enjoyable way to help students appreciate cultural diversity.
