The World Language Program at PV School

The World Language program begins in Grade Six, offering an introduction in which the students learn about the Latin, French and Spanish/Hispanic cultures. Classes meet every other day for two marking periods. Students learn numbers, days of the week, months of the year, body parts, aspects of daily life and holiday celebrations. Different learning styles are addressed through reading, songs, games, drawing and videos.

The seventh grade program emphasizes basic conversation with thematic and cultural units, striving to make the students more familiar and comfortable with the sounds and expressions of the languages. All our programs provide our students with connections between English and the target language, strengthening the students’ own language skills in the process. The cultural pieces encourage comparisons among multi-cultural communities, helping to make our students citizens of the world.

The eighth grade program offers Latin, French and Spanish with the goal of students reaching the level two course at the high school. We continue to build upon what was learned in 7th grade to foster fluency and comprehension in reading, writing, listening and speaking. We strive to keep activities rigorous and relevant in all our classes.

The 8th grade program in Spanish currently offers 3 choices:

  • the Intro to World Cultures class meets every other day and provides basics in Spanish and other world cultures.
  • Our Spanish 8 classes also meet every other day (as do French and Latin) and continue with the program from 7th grade with a goal of entering Spanish 2 at PTHS.
  • Our Enriched Spanish 8 classes meet every day and work at a faster pace. The goal here is to prepare the students for Spanish 2 Honors at the High School.

All classes enjoy a variety of language and cultural activities as we learn about our Global societies. These may include projects, films, field trips, guest speakers and many hands-on experiences. Our programs are exciting, busy, colorful and challenging.
