Social Studies Philosophy
Success in the art of Social Studies can be measured through a multitude of behaviors. One could begin with the simplicity of acquisition of knowledge, or the ability to cite and discuss content learned in general terms, however, one would be remiss to complete their story of success there.
A Social Studies teacher's job is to instill the belief and passion that history is not merely the studying of events past, but rather guiding a child to assimilate the understanding that history is alive and actively influencing their everyday lives - from the books they read, the art they appreciate, the music they enjoy, to the news reports of economy, culture, or wars in lands near or far.
In guiding a child to understand this, a teacher empowers a child to realize that they can and must be active participants in the social and political issues which surround them - secure in the knowledge and understanding that one voice, their voice, can be heard and could possibly change the world, as so many others before them have successfully achieved. Children who feel empowered to change the world in which they live - that is a true measure of success!
Grade 8 Social Studies:
Modern World History is a year-long survey of the major world events from the European Renaissance through World War II. Students engage in projects and readings that involve them in past and present issues facing American citizens. This course’s capstone activity challenges each student to complete a “Take Action” project, an in-depth research-based service learning experience.
