World Language Electives

Philosophy:

Overall, the World Language program seeks to provide the skills necessary to communicate in varied global communities.  Cross cultural understanding and appreciation are major objectives and essential components in basic language competency.  Our program link geography, social studies, art, music, math, physical education, technology, language skills and character education to a connection with a multicultural world.

Course Descriptions

Grade 6

Grade 6 offers a semester course to all students exploring the study of language and communication.  Beginning with signs and symbols, classes progress through a brief introduction to Latin, Spanish and French.  Through this course, our students are better prepared to choose the language they wish to pursue in Grade 7 and 8.

Grade 7

Grade 7 offers continued study in three languages: French, Latin and Spanish.  The 7^th grade program presents each language with simple phrases and vocabulary, emphasizing communication skills as well as cultural understanding.  Students are able to connect with each other and with people from other cultures through simple dialogues.  It cultivates greater awareness and respect for the world’s population.

Grade 8

Grade 8 presents a continuation of the grade 7 language study in each of the three languages.  Students are able to communicate with deeper understanding and language skills, while developing an even higher level of awareness of the similarities and differences between global communities.

Normally, the Study of World Languages and cultures is offered on alternating days in all three grades.

Our grade 8 program also offers an enriched Spanish course.  These classes meet every day and follow a more rigorous program that prepares our students for Level 2 Spanish at the high school level.  This course requires pre-requisites which include high academic achievement in 7^th grade, high student motivation and teacher recommendation.
