First Grade
January and February may bring the cold weather, but first grade students will be keeping warm by working hard! First graders will be reading lots of fiction and non-fiction stories during the winter. We will focus on comprehension and making connections. We will also work on characters, setting, and finding details. It’s a lot of hard work but, don’t worry…it will certainly pay off as you see how much your child’s fluency is improving!
During Writing Workshop, the students will work hard on proofreading and making revisions to spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure. They will even work in partners to help revise all the wonderful “small moments” they have been writing!
Practice, practice, practice! The students in first grade have been busy practicing their math by learning doubles facts, fact families, and many addition and subtraction strategies. During January and February, the students will learn about geometric shapes and fractions. Then we’ll begin telling time to the hour and half hour!
Did you know that matter is everything around you? If not, just ask your first grader! They have been learning about the properties of solids, liquids, and gases! What a fun science unit!
During January and February we will learn about our new President and the many accomplishments Martin Luther King Jr. We will also learn all about Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. Stay warm!!
