The focus of instruction using Celebration Press Reading: Good Habits, Great Readers is to engage students both in small group and whole group instruction. Strategies and skills are introduced in a whole group setting, while allowing students to practice and master these reading strategies and skills in small group settings. The seven research based reading habits that are utilized in this program are: students seeing themselves as readers, making sense of text, using prior knowledge, understanding how stories work, reading to learn, monitoring and organizing ideas and information, and thinking critically about text. By focusing on these habits students acquire the skills for becoming great readers.
The spelling program Words Their Way consists of a consumable workbook in which the students will have spelling practice based on specific spelling patterns or skills. The workbook contains a 3 page lesson for each sort, including word cards and written activities. Depending on the level of instruction students will have word lists based on vowel patterns, spelling patterns, or categorizing words by meaning or part of speech. Also, located on the front page of the student workbook is a sample list of nightly activities you can use to help your child with that week’s word list.
