The Visual Arts are an important aspect of our cultural heritage and have a significant place in our everyday lives. All children need a variety of experiences to assist them in exploring their environment. Through art, children learn to value their own uniqueness and to appreciate the individuality of others. Art education fosters perceptual awareness, critical thinking, creativity, and the production of art, aesthetic valuing, and an understanding of our past and present cultures. The students develop life coping skills, aesthetic literacy, communication skills and experiences in understanding one’s self.
As delineated in the Core Curriculum Content Standards in the Arts, it is essential that art be an integral part of every elementary and secondary education with differentiated instruction to accommodate the varied needs and interests of the students. We live in a multicultural society and a broad based interdisciplinary study is an important aspect of a child’s educational experience.
Art education develops higher-level thinking skills, including those that require critical and divergent thinking and evaluative ability. Education in the arts is a significant factor in developing aesthetic awareness and fostering an appreciation for cultural diversity and the role of art in our daily lives. Every individual needs to be provided with a balanced view of life experiences.
Art education provides an opportunity for a child to develop personal, social, cognitive, and physical and language skills. True art education in Pequannock is an indispensable part of learning that will initiate and complement the educational experience of every child.
