email warning

To all of our Pequannock Stakeholders,

Last night we had two compromised email accounts that spammed false information to our community. While we have quarantined the issue internally, I wanted to share warning signs to turn this into a teachable moment with an example below.

1) The sender, while it appeared to be from Google Drive, was from an account that is not someone you know.

2) The email is not FROM Michael Portas, it was a forward that used his name (this attack is called Executive Name-Dropping)

3) This file linked below is especially malicious. Again, named after an executive in the district, the file is a redirect to malicious code. When clicked, you authorize the owner to bypass your password AND multifactor authentication giving the hacker 100% access to your account. Unless you are 100% sure, never click a link sent via email.

Our two accounts that were compromised then sent the below email to hundreds of email accounts. If you saw this email and thought it was too good to be true, you would be correct. Contacting the person in that email would lead to a scammer who wants to get money from you. If you contacted the scammer, please contact our local police department.

false email

I am sorry for any disruption the community may have experienced but am glad I can take this moment to share knowledge to make our digital community safer.

Best Regards,

Matt Shea, Chief Technology Officer at Pequannock Township School District
